Artist Bios
Talya Rubin is a Montreal born, Sydney based writer, performer and creator of new work for live performance. She has toured with her original solo plays, Ariadne’s Thread, The Girl With No Hands and Of The Causes of Wonderful Things to festivals in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Montreal, Prague and Toronto including Brisbane Festival’s Under The Radar, LiveWorks, Performance Space, Sydney and Arts House, Melbourne. The Adelaide Advertiser wrote of her work: “The writing is out of this world, as sweet as honey and just as intense 5/5.” ABC Radio National commissioned Talya to adapt and perform Ariadne’s Thread as a radio drama, broadcast nationwide and The Girl With No Hands was nominated for a MECCA (Montreal English Critics Circle Award) for best new text. The Girl With No Hands was invited to be part of Summerworks, Toronto, a festival of new writing, where it was shown at Theatre Passe Muraille and named one of the “outstanding performances” of the festival. Two of her shows were also selected to be part of the Wildside Festival at Centaur Theatre in Montreal, a curated festival of new and innovative theatre. As a poet, Talya won the National Canadian Bronwen Wallace award for poetry for the most promising writer under the age of 35. Most recently, she was short listed for the Winston Collins/Descant prize for Best Canadian poem of 2011. In July, she was writer in residence at the Lockup Cultural Centre in Newcastle, working on a collection of poetry.
Nick James is a writer and film director born in Chile from Australian parents. His short films have been screened at festivals in Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, San Francisco, Chile, Argentina, Montreal, Adelaide and Melbourne. He was awarded two travel grants one from the Australian Film Commission and one from Film Victoria to represent his film at the Stuggart Film Winter Festival for Expanded Media and the Castro Theatre as part of the San Francisco International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Nick directed and co-devised Of The Causes of Wonderful Things.
